Covenant Groups in December

Philip Beck

In our December gatherings, group members contemplated “the gift of mystery.”  The first mystery is, what does that mean?  It doesn’t necessarily mean looking for an answer of any kind. As December’s “Soul Matters” puts it, we tend to regard “the unexplainable [as] simply a lock to be picked, a code to be cracked, a puzzle to be figured out. But what if mystery isn’t just something to solve? What if it’s also something to be listened to?”   Perhaps mystery is less something we should chase after than something we let find us.  We’ve probably all experienced a moment of insight into ourselves or the world, a sudden feeling of joy at being alive, a glimpse of the spirit that permeates all existence.   Moments like those make us feel that we’re part of something greater than ourselves.  What that greater something is—that’s the mystery.  But keeping ourselves open to it, to the unknown, the “what ifs,” might be the best way we have of transforming our lives.

If questions like these intrigue you, you might be ready to join a covenant group. The covenant group program offers its members the opportunity to share their views and deepen their understanding of a wide range of issues while creating closer ties with other UUs. You can learn mmore about the program and how to join a group by contacting Jan Locher (354- 6260, locherj@mchsi.com).
