Change in immigration policy will impact an untold number of people. We hold our Circle of Friends families in our hearts as we wade into unchartered waters. These families include four Guatemalan families, an Afghan family of five, two Cuban couples and a Ukrainian family who has just arrived. In addition, our members have become supportive of families from Congo, Egypt, and Afghanistan. We also stay in touch with Ko Ko, from Myanmar, the first person we sponsored.
The Day of Service Valentine Party on February 15 for immigrant children and their families is a wonderful way for UUS members to become more involved. Proximity is important to understanding the needs of others. Proximity is simply showing up when you have an opportunity. Come to UUS on February 15 at 1 pm for an opportunity to reach out to others.
Here are other ways to get involved: 1) Partner with a learner of English for conversation, 2) Become a pen pal to an immigrant in prison, or someone needing practice in writing English 3) Offer rides to hard-to get-to places, like the DOT for a driver’s license or North Liberty, 4) Enjoy a movie or concert with a new friend, 5) Orient a newcomer to the library or museum, 6) Show up at rallys, marches, or lobby days at the Capitol 7) Stay informed, then write your legislators, 8) Contribute generously to such agencies as CommUnity or Houses to Homes. Amazingly, such actions benefit you as well!
Social Justice Day of Service
Day of Service provides a monthly opportunity for UUS members to gather and collaborate to provide a service to an agency or to fill a need in the community. The project for January was collecting toiletries, socks, and underwear for those leaving prison for Inside Out Recovery . We met in the UUS Fellowship Hall to sort and fill backpacks with these items. Thank you to the 20-25 folks who showed up! Thanks also to Dave Martin for delivering the backpacks and extra toiletries.
