Benefit Concert for Uptown Bills
December 8 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
UUS and the Extend the Dream Foundation will host a fundraiser for Uptown Bill’s on Saturday, December 8th, at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. Suggested donations of $20 or more will be taken at the door, where attendees can also order one of Uptown Bill’s famous shakes, vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry, for $5 (to be served during intermission). Folksinger-songwriter and frequent “A Prairie Home Companion” guest Dave Moore will headline the concert, along with Al Murphy, the area’s foremost country fiddler and member of “The Burlington Street Bluegrass Band” and his wife, Aleta, as well as “Pennies on the Rail,” a band frequently featured on Saturday nights at Uptown Bill’s.
Uptown Bill’s, named after the late Bill Sackter and located at 730 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City, is a coffeehouse, used bookstore, and gathering place that strives to nurture and encourage individuals with disabilities. With the help of many volunteers, it provides employment and micro-enterprise opportunities for individuals with disabilities. It also provides a venue for musical groups and budding authors, artists, and musicians. Access2Independence and Combined Efforts provide arts classes there, and many support groups use the space as well. It is a space for people of all abilities to work, play, listen, and create in a safe and comfortable environment. Uptown Bill’s also operates radio station KICI at 105.3 FM and sponsors a local television program focused on disabilities awareness in cooperation with PATV (channel 18).
