In the course of providing opportunities for UUSIC
members and friends to engage in community service and social action,
the Social Justice Coordinating Committee organizes special solicitations
and other fund-raising efforts to help meet the needs of low-income
families, or those with other needs, through its support of such local
organizations as the Iowa City Crisis Center, Emma Goldman Clinic for
Women, Elder Services, Youth Homes, Free Medical and Free Dental clinics,
and several global hunger projects. SJCC members staff a bi-weekly
advocacy table after the Sunday service, where UUs may write letters
or postcards to their state and Congressional lawmakers on such issues
as gun control, peace and homelessness.
