You’ll be welcome! But first—a big decision!
You’ll
have a choice of two services: On Sunday mornings from September through May we meet at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. for church services and religious education classes. During June, July and August we gather at 9:30 a.m. for our lay-led, less formal services in Channing Hall, in the lower level of our building.
Located as we are in the heart of downtown
Iowa City, we’re
easy to find (map).
And when you get here, you’ll have no trouble
finding a place to park—in the easternmost three bays of the
city lot immediately east of the church, or in the large ramp just
across Gilbert Street
to the west (free on Sunday!)…or on the street in front of the
church…or in the non-reserved portion of the University lot diagonally
across the Iowa Avenue-Gilbert Street intersection…or the University
Community Credit Union lot, just one block to the east on Iowa Avenue.
Children? We welcome them! We have childcare for
infants and children through age 4, and religious education classes
that your older children
may visit if they wish. Visit Lifespan
Education for more details Your
children may also stay with you during the service.
You’ll find our Worship Services in the
Sanctuary, reached either by making your way up a half-flight of
stairs from the main entrance
on Iowa Avenue or through our modest handicapped entrance on the east
side of the building, next to the parking lot, then to an elevator
that will deliver you to the Sanctuary level one floor up.
And by all means come socialize with us over
coffee after each service.
OTHER QUESTIONS
If you have any unanswered questions about our worship
services, feel free to ask the ushers as you enter the sanctuary. Or
you may contact us. Here are some other common questions:
• What should I wear to the worship service?
It’s up to you. You will not be given the cold-shoulder if you
do not dress in your “Sunday best”. Some members
of our congregation are comfortable coming to services in casual
attire and
others prefer to dress up a little.
• Are the facilities accessible?
We've tried our best to make them so, with the ramp and handicapped entrance
on the east (parking lot) side of the building, an elevator that carries
people and wheelchairs to the upper floors of the Worthley (religious education)
Building , and a chairlift to make it possible to join in the coffee and
conversation on our lowest (Channing Hall) level. Our ushers are happy to
provide assistance to anyone who has mobility or vision impairments. Since
we do not yet have automatic doors, assistance may be needed to enter the
building, and to reach and board the elevator--so if such help will be useful
to you, please call our office (319-337-3443) by the Friday prior to the
service so that we can inform the ushers to expect you. Additionally, for
those who have difficulty hearing, we provide assistive listening devices,
which may be obtained from an usher as you enter.
• Are there people in the congregation who believe what I believe?
There may be. If you would like to learn more about the beliefs of
those in our congregation and about the Unitarian-Universalist
(UU) faith in general, there are many resources for you to explore. You
should start by visiting our About Us page. Here are other
great resources from the Unitarian Universalist Association: Newcomers Bulletin Board Newcomers mailing list Our Unitarian Universalist Faith: Frequently Asked Questions
