The UUS annual Thirty Days of Love campaign will kick off on Sunday, January 14th with two Days of Service. All members and friends are invited to attend a shortened Sunday worship service at 9:30 am followed by opportunities for children and adults to engage in twelve different social justice activities.
Because of space concerns, some of the activities require advanced sign up. If you are interested in signing up for cooking for the Free Lunch Program, decorating cookies, making potholders, compiling items for Re-entry citizens, or constructing bat houses, please use this link to sign up for these specific activities: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094daca722a2fa7-uusjanuary. Other events, such as blanket-making, may be attended without prior signup.
For those wanting a more reflective experience, there will be movie watching, writing postcards to legislators, and discussing social justice issues on the environment, immigration, and mass incarceration. A special session called “Keeping Your Flame of Hope Alive” will be presented by Miriam Kashia.
Donations of toiletries are being collected for our project supporting Inside Out, a nonprofit supporting returning citizens who had been incarcerated. Needed items include shampoo, deodorant, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, snack food such as granola bars, towels, and new, white crew-neck T-shirts (large or extra large). Donated items can be placed in a box in the church’s coat room.
Following the social justice activities, a Guatemalan themed lunch will be provided at noon. Donations will be accepted and will benefit the Circle of Friends, the UUS group supporting immigration.
Our second Day of Service is on Saturday, January 20th. The activities include cleaning and shelving books at Uptown Bills, folding brochures and indoor planting at Transformative Healing (both from 9 am to noon), and cooking at Ronald McDonald house (from 4 to 6 pm). The link for sign-ups is here (same link as above).
These Days of Service address our second principle: justice, equity and compassion in human relations. Paper sign up forms will also be available for both days on upcoming Sundays.
