Secular
Humanists
Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 PM
in the Fireside Room
Every year our Secular
Humanists group chooses a book to read and
discuss. On Tuesday, February 21, we will
gather at 7:30 PM in the Fireside Room to
share a conversation about this year’s
selection, Why We Believe in God(s) --
A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith.
University of Virginia
psychiatrist A. J. Thomson was motivated
to write this book by the tragedy of 9-11.
He wanted to clarify, for himself and for
his readers, what neuroscience can tell us
about the human propensity for religious
belief, including religiosity, and its
role in human evolution. Please join us
for an evening’s conversation about this
fascinating facet of human nature.

The
seven principles
of Unitarian Universalism call upon UUs to engage in a
"a free and
responsible search for truth and meaning,"
and acknowledge many
sources, among them:
Humanist teachings which
counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and
the results of science, and warn us against
idolatries of the mind and spirit.
Now beginning our eighth year, we UUSIC
Secular Humanists gather on the third
Tuesday of each month, September through
May, at 7:30 PM, usually in the
Fireside Room at UUSIC. Participants
include UUSIC members, friends, and
visitors who variously identify
themselves as religious humanists,
secular humanists, freethinkers,
agnostics, atheists, and skeptics -- all
are welcome!
If you would like to
receive meeting announcements and materials,
email us
with the words
"UUSIC Secular Humanists" in the message
line, and ask to have your name added to
the UUSIC Secular Humanists email list.
