INTERWEAVE BRUNCH, MAY 22 |
|
Interweave will show the film
Jihad for Love on
Saturday, May 22nd. Theater
doors open at 6 PM for snacks
from the concession stand and
the movie (with popcorn!)
starts at 7:00 PM.
The plight
of lesbian and gay Muslims
worldwide is explored in this
feature-length documentary,
which brings to light the
hidden lives of gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgender
Muslims. It takes us to where
the silence has been loudest,
to countries such as Saudi
Arabia, Iran, and Iraq.
According
to film director Parvez
Sharma, it was a difficult for
individuals to come forward
and tell their stories, but
even under the threat of
violence, they were willing to
take the risk because they
felt that Islam is at a
tipping point, and the role of
religious fundamentalism in
daily life must be addressed.
Parvez Sharma was named one of
50 visionaries by UTNE Reader.
