Project Tree Plant

A shared endeavor of Iowa City's

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church,
UUSIC, and 5th grade students and teachers from Grant Wood School

October 21, 2009

Dear UUSIC Members and Friends,

A BIG thank you for your generous contributions to our Green Sanctuary Project Tree Plant, a shared endeavor of Iowa City's Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the staff and 5th grade students of Grant Wood School, and UUSIC.

Before the tree was planted, "The Heart of the Tree," slightly abridged and adapted to the occasion, was read by Kathy Sadler, 5th grade teacher; Reverend Orlando Dial, minister at Bethel AME; and Arnold Lindaman, president of the UUSIC board.

The weather was perfect, students attentive and happy; teachers and principal, enthusiastic; and UU volunteers, helpful.  Special thanks to:

  • Gary Lawrenson, who helped Arnold dig the hole

  • Jim and Pat Ephgrave and Merle and Lois Hughes, who helped plant the tree.

  • Rev. Orlando Dial  and the members of the Bethel AME, who contributed generously toward the cost of the tree

  • UUSIC members and friends, who likewise contributed generously

The Heart of the Tree

Henry Cuyler (1855 – 1896)

What do we plant who plant this tree?

We plant a friend of sun and sky;

We plant the flag of breezes free;

The shaft of beauty, towering high.

These things we plant who plant this tree.

What do we plant who plant this tree?

We plant cool shade and tender rain,

And seed and bud of days to be,

And years that fade and flush again;

We plant the glory of the plain;

We plant the forest’s heritage;

The harvest of a coming age;

The joy that unborn eyes shall see --

These things we plant who plant this tree.

What do we plant who plant this tree?

We plant in love of school and loyalty

And far-cast thought of civic good --

Our blessings on this neighborhood.

A nation’s growth from sea to sea

Stirs in our hearts who plant this tree!

As the students and teachers were filling the hole with soil, we felt the meaning and application of our UU seventh principle:

Respect for the interdependent web of all existence
of which we are a part.

Arnold Lindaman
Project Tree Plant Coordinator
President, UUSIC Board of Directors
