President Sue Otto joined the UUSIC in
2006. She has served as a Worship
Associate, a member of the Stewardship
Committee, and a mentor for the junior high
coming of age class. In 2009 she
participated in the service learning trip to
Mexico with the senior high youth and other
members of the congregation. She is a
member of a covenant group and participates
regularly Welcome Home Wednesdays. Sue
is director of the University of Iowa
Language Media Center and an adjunct
associate professor in the Department of
Spanish and Portuguese and in International
Programs/Second Language Acquisition. She
enjoys reading, music, traveling,
cooking/baking, and spending time outdoors.
She has one son who lives and works in the
Iowa City area.
Vice President
Sally Hartman
has, for the past 25 years, teamed up
with many
supportive and
colorful UUSIC
members to
teach RE,
coordinate
free lunch,
serve on the
Children and Youth
Committee and Young Adult Group, co-lead
a covenant
group, and
facilitate
Partner Church
activities.
Adventures
with the
Senior High
Youth have
been her
passion for
the last 7
years.
Sally and her
husband Steve
Dunbar have
three grown
children. When
she is not on
her job as a
school
psychologist,
she delves
into her
reading stack,
fumbles with
her guitar,
imposes on out
of state
relatives, and
battles green
leafy invaders
in her yard
with only a
little
success.
Serving on the
board is an
honor that
provides a
wider
perspective on
what she cares
about most:
the search,
and the
promise of
discoveries
along the way.
Past President
Russ Lenth, a
34-year
resident of
Iowa City,
first came to
UUSIC on
Easter Sunday,
1989. Prior to
that, he had
no religious
affiliation.
He and wife
Jane DeWitt
became members
not long after
being married
at UUSIC. Russ
has been
involved in RE
classes,
choir, and
committee
work. He
served on the
board in
1994-97 as
program
trustee,
chaired the
Stewardship
Committee in
2003, and
served as a
worship
associate and
on the
"EvolUUtion"
task force.
His family
includes Jane
and two adult
sons. Russ
plays the horn
for fun, and
teaches
statistics for
a living. Russ
says, "I think
this is an
exciting time
for our
congregation,
and I look
forward to
welcoming our
new minister
and playing a
role in
shaping the
future that we
build for our
church."
Secretary Susan Salterberg has been a member of the UUSIC community
since 2006. During her time at UUSIC
she has valued Sunday services, Welcome Home
Wednesdays, her Covenant Group, special
events at the church, committee work, and
coffee hour. They all have been avenues for
growth, and ways for her to connect with
others within the community. Susan most
recently served on the Ministerial Search
Committee; she
also has been
a Worship
Associate, a
member of the
Children and
Youth
Committee, and
an Our Whole
Lives (OWL)
instructor.
Susan works as
an
environmental
educator for
the University
of Northern
Iowa out of
her home
office in Iowa
City.

in many
different
locales, both
domestically
and
internationally,
they chose to
return to Iowa
City in the
mid-1990s.
Doug retired
from full time
work as a
consulting

goal and wish
during his

UUSIC.
Trustee Lisa Kieffer Haverkamp is originally from Rock Island,
Illinois, taught in Clinton, Iowa, and came
to Iowa City in 1989 to complete a Masters
in Educational Administration. She’s served
as an elementary principal in the area for
fourteen years and currently works at Grant
Wood AEA as a regional administrator. Coming
to IC, she met Michael and they were marred
in 1991. They have two girls, Rowan 12 and
Laurel 8. They love refurbishing their old
homes and Lisa enjoys gardening, biking and
running the girls around. They began coming
to UUSIC shortly after being married. At
UUSIC they found an accepting place that
recognized their

UU News Christian upbringing. Lisa has
been teaching RE for several years. Her
interest in UUSIC is to support our
continued growth as a community and
transition with a new minister.
Trustee Jim Laughlin has been a member of UUSIC
since 1978. He sings in the choir, has
served on Membership, was a member of
Building and Grounds and the Space Committee
and was on a Conflict Management Task Force.
He recently has served two terms as a
Worship Associate. Jim is a retired
Postmaster who lives on an acreage outside
of West Branch raising horses with his wife,
Barbara. His son Jeremy is a US Marine in
San Diego, California. Jim enjoys growing
vegetables and flowers, playing golf and
cross country skiing. He’s an artist,
painting mainly landscapes, and is a gourmet
cook and wine enthusiast.
Trustee Jerry
Nordquist
has
been a member
of UUSIC for
more than
forty five
years. He and
Carol, now
retired from
the University
of Iowa, were
attracted to
the church
initially
because of its
outstanding RE
Program. They
enrolled their
two children
and were very
pleased with
the
instruction
they received.
Over the years
Jerry has
served on the
UUSIC board
(twice) and on
committees
that include
leadership
development,
stewardship
(co-chair),
finance
(chair),
internal
audit,
endowment, and
religious
services. He
has also
subbed in RE,
worked on
buildings and
grounds crews,
and is a
long-time
member of
Worthley
Evenings.
Presently his
civic
activities
include
volunteering
at the
Miracles in
Motion riding
center in
Swisher, Iowa,
and singing in
the Johnson
County Senior
Center choir.
Trustee Paul
Pomrehn
has been an
active member
of UUSIC since
the early 80s.
He and Deb
joined because
the society's
principles
appealed to
them and they
wanted to
provide their
children,
Andrea, Teresa
and Greg, with
a meaningful
religious
education. About
30 years and 3
grandchildren
later, he's
still here. He
has served the
society as a
volunteer on
several
committees
through the
years; the
most recent
include the
old Buildings
and Grounds
Committee and
Worship
Associates. He
has done a
little
religious
education
work, mostly
subbing when
our children
were younger
and then a
year as an OWL
teacher for
junior high.
He also served
a term on the
UUSIC Board
during Fritz
Hudson's
ministry.
Paul
currently
works as a
staff
psychiatrist
at the
Community
Mental Health
Center for
Mideastern
Iowa. Prior to
his training
in psychiatry
from
2001-2005,
Paul was a
faculty member
in the College
