Committee on Congregational Relations

At its December 14th meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the creation of the Committee on Congregational Relations (CCR).

Conflict is an inescapable part of human relations. Our challenge is to resolve conflicts in ways that build rather than diminish community. Often it is helpful to involve other skilled people to advise and assist parties in conflict to resolve their differences in positive ways. The purpose of the UUSIC Committee on Congregational Relations is chartered to fill that role.

The purpose of the Committee on Congregational Relations is to promote healthy and constructive ways for members and friends to deal with disagreements. The CCR will also assist individuals or groups with concerns to find appropriate mechanisms for expressing and addressing those concerns and to assist the board and the membership to promote greater internal accountability and responsibility.

The committee will:

  1. Offer periodic training in constructive communication and conflict management skills

  2. Assist in development of behavioral covenants

  3. Offer resolution services or facilitation of restorative conversations for any member or friend of UUSIC who wants help in dealing with issues involving other parties in the church

  4. Collaborate with other church bodies who must respond to congregational concerns, such as the board, Committee on Ministry, and the Staff Relations Committee

  1. Members of this committee will be chosen from among nominees who have experience in such areas as mediation, therapy, communications, and human resources.

  2. The Committee on Congregational Relations shall be composed of four to six members, with overlapping three-year terms. Members of the committee shall be approved by the Board of Directors.

  3. Members will be skilled in dispute management, mediation, or be willing to receive training in that area. Potential members can self nominate or be nominated by another.

  4.  No member of the CCR or any member or friend of UUSIC working with the CRR shall engage in mental health therapy or counseling in connection with any dispute.
